Free Tax Preparation Available for Eligible Residents

Jan 31, 2024

This tax season, Community Action Akron Summit is again offering free tax preparation and filing through the Akron Summit Earned Income Tax Program.

The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is an essential tax credit that allows residents to reduce their tax liabilities and possibly receive a refund to cover crucial expenses. However, many eligible individuals and families do not know they qualify or lack the resources to file their taxes properly to claim the EITC.

Community Action's free tax preparation program provides IRS-certified volunteers that can provide comprehensive tax filing help to eligible residents at no charge. The tax assistance includes determining eligibility for the EITC and other tax credits and preparation to ensure taxpayers receive the total amount for which they qualify.

Tax credit eligibility guidelines for Year 2023, include:

  • Families with three or more qualifying children who earned less than $56,838 in 2023 (or less than $63,398 for married filing jointly) are eligible for a credit of up to $7,430.
  • Families with two qualifying children who earned less than $52,918 in 2023 (or less than $59,478 for married filing jointly) are eligible for a credit of up to $6,604.
  • Families with one qualifying child who earned less than $46,560 in 2023 (or less than $53,120 for married filing jointly) are eligible for a credit of up to $3,995.
  • Individuals who do not have a qualifying child, with earned income of less than $17,640 in 2023 (or less than $24,210 for married filing jointly) are eligible for a credit up to $600.

Eligible residents can schedule an appointment by calling 234-206-3170 or visiting app.capappointments.com/EITC.
